About the event
Completed your White Patch and want to take your bush survival skills to the next level? This Yellow Patch 3 Day Survival Course is for you! **Haven't done your White Patch yet? No worries, book in for the next one here You can also learn more about The Patch System here
This is a full, 3 day course with plenty of information to help you continue on your journey of safe and sustainable foraging and bushcraft in a relaxed, social and inclusive environment. You'll walk away with even deeper educational teachings, having spent more time learning hands on in the bush.
The Basic Yellow Patch Course Outline:
Friday: Meet and greet and set up tents, swags etc. Go back through the fundamentals learnt on the White Patch course including fire, water, shelter, tracking, cloud ID and more.
Saturday: A full day in the bush identifying useful plants, animal tracks and bird calls.
Sunday: A full day in the field at the Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary identifying useful plants and learning about the animals within the park, and studying their tracks and scats.
This interactive, upbeat and informative weekend with Jake is designed for you to:
Deepen your education and build more confidence in identifying and using edible and medicinal native and introduced plants
Further your fundamental survival skills
Establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with the land and all its inhabitants
Revisit important advice on safe, sustainable and respectful foraging
Gain sustainability & environmental awareness
Share campfire stories, music and bushcraft related discussions
Have a fun full day in the bush identifying more species of edible & medicinal wild plants, tracks, birds, clouds, where to find water and much, much more!
PLUS You'll deepen your knowledge on:
Bush nutrition - where to get your carbohydrates, protein, fats and vitamins and minerals from the wild. Includes 15 page handout.
Bush navigation & tracking through hands on excercises
Cloud ID & weather prediction. Includes advanced charts & 3 page handout.
Getting up close and personal with the various species of Australian animals in the 80 acre wildlife sanctuary, focusing on identifying their tracks, scats and other signs they leave.
Weaving a basket, smoker or fish/bird trap out of introduced flora species.
Bird language and ID. Including a detailed chart with photos of over 40 bird species commonly encountered across the East Coast of Australia.
Friction fire making and string making using different mediums and techniques
You'll walk away feeling more confident in your bush survival skills!
Please note: Each course differs according to the seasons and what is growing and available, so you will gain more information on the wild food and medicinal plants available in that particular season.
YES! This Yellow Patch Course is suited to ethical omnivores, vegetarians and vegans and anyone wishing to learn more about medicinal & edible wild plants.

** COURSE DETAILS **
Arrive: Friday 9.45am sharp for a 10am start. (Optional: Meet at 4.30pm sharp the day before, on Thursday, to set up camp and stay an extra night).
Finish: Approx 4pm, Sunday
CAMPING OPTIONS
Self Sufficient Camping: While you are welcome to bring your own tent, we now have 12 family size canvas tents already set up and free of charge! They've even got camp mattresses in them. Just bring your sleeping bag/s and pillow and you're good to go. You can check out what they look like here - cost is included in your course ticket.
Cabin Stay: Alternatively you can stay in fully self sufficient cabins (for a fee) by booking online or contacting the Walkabout Park directly on 4375 1100.
Vehicle Camping: The area we do a lot of the activities is right next to where you will park your car, so if you want to camp in or next to your vehicle - no worries at all.
The Walkabout Park has toilets, hot showers, electricity (power points) and even a couple of fridge/freezers!
TO BRING
NOTEBOOK & PEN! Even if you aren't a big note taker, there will likely be something you WILL want to write down - especially regarding Jake's encyclopedic plant knowledge.
Phone/camera
Phone charger - there're power points in the campsite.
Wear: Warm / cool layers, hiking boots (optional) or walking shoes, sun hat, sunscreen, raincoat. Bring spare socks. Please be prepared for all weather!
Please bring/wear your White Patch too as proof of participation and to get into the spirit of the Patch System!
Food: Please ensure you bring enough food and snacks for the entire duration of the weekend. Recommended: Fruit, nuts, muesli bars, canned foods, noodles (easy stuff) and/or pre prepped healthy meals in containers that can be kept in the camp refrigerator. There is a microwave and BBQs on site or you can bring your own cooking equipment. Please make sure to bring a water bottle or 2.
Again, please be prepared for colder weather at night, with extra layers, blankets and in the colder months, gloves, thermals and a beanie.
*Now we are at the Walkabout Park, you can wake up to a nice hot shower so bring a towel if you want to take advantage of this!

ABOUT JAKE: Jake Cassar has been described as an encyclopedia of bush knowledge, earning this reputation by living in the wilderness for extended periods and subsiding largely from only what he can sustainably and respectfully obtain from the bush. When Jake isn't visiting family, he lives in the bush in his Blackwolf canvas tent on the Western Central Coast.

This course is not suitable for kids. This event is only suitable for ages 15+
The hikes / walks are are not too far from the bushcamp and are suitable for all fitness levels
No dogs or animals are permitted.
All events go ahead rain, hail or shine!
